Instead of running as a service, consider running as a scheduled task.
Very easy to run many simultaneously under an unprivileged account, and
it makes seeing start times and status simple. Use the RunAsDaemon
option. I scan about 500 devices with 10 tasks, polling about 2000
different counters on an old Pentium 3 server that is also doing a lot
of other monitoring tasks. Don't even have to use RRDtool to get the
needed performance.
