My dual Intel(R) Xeon(R) CPU 5160 @ 3.00GHz stepping 0b
is quite bored with 500 devices. But the main thing is fast disks. I
use a SAS array of Vendor: SEAGATE Model: ST973451SS Rev: SM04
With four of those in a LVM stripe set, it runs very well.
Of course, to keep track of that many devices, templates are a must.

I would add that the OP should be using rrd databases and not native
MRTG databases and rateup. <br>

I would recommend router2 for the frontend.<br>
