RRDtool works with intervals.  This said it is obvious that you
need at least two updates.  Also, these updates should not be
further apart than the heartbeat value and they should include
one complete normalized interval.

Look into normalization, interpolation et cetera.  For now,
just accept that RRDtool needs this value to do its job.
