Personally: I'd like more than say, 5 or 10 fpings, since if I'm measuring packet loss [which is the most important metric for me] I would like a bit more of a total sample.<br>

1 packet lost in a 10 packet set is 10% loss. <br>
1 / 20 is only 5%.<br>

In fact, I've thought about going to 40 fpings for that very reason, but 20 seems like a reasonable middle-ground.<br>

Why are your NetAdmins complaining? (40) 64 byte packets over even, say 10 seconds is like 2.4kbps [BITS, not bytes].<br>

Even totally anemic overloaded 128Kbps DSL pipes should be able to handle that additional load with no noticeable adverse impact.<br>
I'm sure they're complaining - I'm just suggesting they're complaining over the aesthetics [at best] of the situation, rather than something substantive. <br>

No reason you need 20 fpings - but a larger sample makes for a better/more accurate test outcome. (20) 64 byte packets is a trivial amount of traffic for anything other than dial-up. [And even then!]<br>

I am trying to justify not changing this setting as our network admins are complaining about the number of outbound ICMP packets generated by the product we are using (OpenNMS) which uses this functionality.<br>
