not smokeping itself. However it is interesting how the packages evolve through out the years. For example the addition of the init script, the separation of configs for slave and master, the separation of the main config in different files according to section
etc are some of the welcome changes in the packages in the latest distributions.<o:p></o:p></span></p>
<p class="MsoNormal"><span lang="EN-US" style="font-size:11.0pt;font-family:"Calibri","sans-serif";color:#1F497D">They are not taking care of everything though as even with a package only installation on an entirely fresh system you get issues from the Apache
or cgi stuff not interacting as they should with the smokeping process… That’s one of my latest issues, the “new” security model of apache is causing one of the others. I will make separate posts for my issues, don’t bother with those here.<o:p></o:p></span></p>
<p class="MsoNormal"><span lang="EN-US" style="font-size:11.0pt;font-family:"Calibri","sans-serif";color:#1F497D">Just agreeing with what Graig said. Most of the times it’s either an OS problem, permissions or otherwise or a change in some other software..<o:p></o:p></span></p>
<p class="MsoNormal"><span lang="EN-US" style="font-size:11.0pt;font-family:"Calibri","sans-serif";color:#1F497D">I am sure a lot of people here are still running smokeping with the root user..<br>
There are some OS based guides out there (not in the main Smokeping documentation) but a lot are really old. Ubuntu and OpenSuSE are the best choices I believe when choosing package versions. The main advantage that Ubuntu has over OpenSuSE is you don’t need
to add an additional repository (for OpenSuSE it’s Server Management).<o:p></o:p></span></p>

I agree, they're not awesome, but they're definitely do-able. I guess I'd say: I'm sorry you had a hard time. However, in many cases, I think the difficulty lies in that the user doesn't know *nix very well, and how things work in the *nix world. Thus, it takes
forever to do the leg-work and bring yourself up the learning curve. [I know it took ages for me!]<br>
<br>
Once you've got that - you learn some tricks and have enough background to get through most things fairly efficiently. Until then, it's pretty painful, and there doesn't seem to be many ways to help shorten or alleviate that pain.<br>

</span>Using debug into the logs, confirmed the slave was receiving the configs. The pings were being performed and it claimed they were sent.

However, the modification time on the rrd files for the slave on the master did not change. I did not see slavecache files either. Changed perms for the directory to 777 and slavecache files appeared, but rrd was not updated. Fiddled with changing rrd to 664
and setting the group to www-data , no go. Gave up, made rrd to 666 and it worked<br>

</span>Finally figured it out, had to change the rrd files on the Master to 666. However, the files are created with 644, so added a cron job to fix the perms.

The communication between server and slave goes through the cgi so the apache user should have read access to the secrets file (that can not be word readable by the way).<br>
