[mrtg] total newbie question

I'm sure I'll get flamed for this, but oh well...
The default MRTG behavior is to graph bytes per second on an interface.
What exact MIB object does it look at to gain this value? Am I correct
in assuming it is ifInOctets and ifOutOctets for the specific interface?
And if so, does one then need to use the 'bits' key in the options line
in order to convert this value, using the MaxBytes value in bits to
ensure the correct bandwidth utilization (eg 10000000 for ethernet)?
