Perhaps you missed my remark about rrdtool. This tool is the successor
to be for mrtg, in fact using the contrib/14all/* stuff you can switch
over to it without much hussle. It can handle 64-bit counters and I think
it will do very well in your case (erm, not only in your case). It will
most likely be the most easy way to switch over to mrtg-3 when it is
available.
