rrdtool is not *that* much magic, you still need to get the counters on
a per-protocol basis. 

You are right in that it will look good using rrdtool, however I think
its safe to assume that the original requestor was not referring to
this.

I do not know where to get those stats, I never needed it so I never
looked for them.
