[mrtg] Compiling GD on AIX

Has anyone successfully installed/built gd 1.8.1 on AIX 4.3.2.  gdkanji.c keeps halting cc on a syntax error with

static debug(format, ...)
AND
static error(format, ...)


Thought I'd try to build gcc 2.95.2 but it halts  on ERROR: Undefined symbol:  .alloc

Any ideas?
