Okay, I then obviously overlooked this.

What are the numbers at the top of the log file?

First line should contain three numbers.
The first number is the time stamp of the most recent poll.  This should
be recent.
The second and third number should be the input values.

The second line should contain 5 numbers: the same time stamp, two
averages (in case of gauge: same as input) and two maxima (again: same)

Third and further: stored, interpolated values similar to those on
line 2.

If the first line is not okay, polling fails.
If the second line (and further) is wrong, maxbytes is wrong.
