I am unable to gift wrap this little present or have it delivered
by Santa Claus, but hopefully it will be well received regardless.

There have been many postings since the update of mrtg to
version 2.9.x, when the RunAsDaemon changed operation
slightly. Thus making it difficult to stop and restart as well as
having many DOS windows flashing up. I indeed
sufferred from similar problems.

The extremely neat solution was to install the freeware
FireDaemon package with which you can setup mrtg as
an NT service.

The benefit to this is that the NT services will :-

- be restarted upon a server reboot without intervention.
- several NT services can be created (maybe one for
routers and one for servers etc) to read different mrtg
  config files.
- each NT service can be stopped and restarted from the
Control Panel whenever you make any mrtg configuration
  file modifications.
- it also removes the DOS windows if you tell it not to
  interact with the desktop.

There are probably several other "NT service" packages
that will do the same. But I would suggest this type of approach
is adopted as it provides solutions to all the frequent problems
posted for the NT RunAsDaemon issues.

Hope this is of use. Merry Xmas etc etc.
