I'm looking for the same answer. I created a script to get the latency
time of the "ping" command.
But sometimes MRTG gets a negative value, and returns an error message:

Problem with Externale get '`/usr/local/mrtg/mrtg-ping`':
Expected an INTEGER for 'out' but got '-25'

What's the problem?
