I'd suggest looking at the uptime perl scripts I wrote, see:
http://www.illuin.demon.co.uk/uptime.html
And modify them to monitor the ifUpTime (I think) if that contains a
sensible value you can use.
Note... the script which polls the SNMP information from devices in my
uptime package can poll thousands of devices simultaneously -- it doesn't
wait for replies before sending the next query with the result it runs
alot quicker than MRTG does when polling SNMP devices. I'm not currently
working in networking, but this is one of those things that MRTG is going
to need to scale.
