[mrtg] variable reset

How does mrtg handle the case when a variable is reset to zero after a period of
time.


eg.  I am collecting the number of mails routed through a server and MRTG is
giving me the mails routed in the last 5 minutes by taking the new reading minus
the previous etc. If the new reading is less than the previous reading because
the mail server stats have been reset how does mrtg deal with this as the number
would be negative.
