[mrtg] Previous value problems

I am monitoring the number of web hits on a server. I am polling an SNMP
variable which is ever increasing. I would expect mrtg to plot the number of
hits in the last 5 minutes i.e. current - previous readings. However in the log
file I just get the following


time       1234343 1234343
time      0 0 0 0
                0 0 0 0


The .old file is showing the previous value. Why is the log file and hence the
graph always showing 0.
