[mrtg] Re: Multiple routers with one CFG file

I started out with MRTG on an NT workstation and then moved it to a UNIX box. I have 4 instances of MRTG running, so I have 4 different config files. I copy the file zstart.cfg and then z#*.cfg (where the # is the number 1, 2, 3, or 4, depending on which config file I am making. I use the number to balance the monitoring between the 4 files. The zstart.cfg looks like this:

# Default global configuration
WorkDir: C:\Inetpub\wwwroot\MRTG
IconDir: /images/
RunAsDaemon: Yes
Interval: 5

# Default Values
Options[_]: growright,bits
WithPeak[_]: mwd
Suppress[_]: y

Nothing spectacular in it. One of my router files starts out:

Directory[_]: rsm1
PageTop[^]:
RSM1.burnsmcd.com

# Router CPU load %
Target[rsm1cpu]:1.3.6.1.4.1.9.2.1.58.0&1.3.6.1.4.1.9.2.1.58.0:public at rsm1
RouterUptime[rsm1cpu]: public at rsm1
MaxBytes[rsm1cpu]: 100
Title[rsm1cpu]: CPU LOAD - rsm1.burnsmcd.com
PageTop[rsm1cpu]:
CPU Load % - rsm1.burnsmcd.com

#Title[rsm1cpu]: CPU Utilization
ShortLegend[rsm1cpu]: %
XSize[rsm1cpu]: 380
YSize[rsm1cpu]: 100
YLegend[rsm1cpu]: CPU Utilization
Legend1[rsm1cpu]: CPU Utilization in % (Load)
Legend2[rsm1cpu]: CPU Utilization in % (Load)
Legend3[rsm1cpu]:
Legend4[rsm1cpu]:
LegendI[rsm1cpu]:
LegendO[rsm1cpu]: Usage
Options[rsm1cpu]: gauge,growright

The only difference in the others is what is in between the "[]"'s. One of the other files that is for a Catalyst 5500 switch has:

Directory[_]: skco1-16-1
Target[skco1-16-1-1_1]: !00-50-f0-e9-8b-fe:public at skco1-16-1
MaxBytes[skco1-16-1-1_1]: 12500000
Title[skco1-16-1-1_1]: skco1-16-1 (): MMF FastEthernet 1/1

I used the 1_1 as the module/port number to differentiate between the ports on the switch.

Now, I do put the Directory[_]: command at the top of each file so I don't end up with thousands of files in one directory. You also have to make sure that the directory exists before you start MRTG.

That is what I thought originally and changed this, they work on their own,
which is what stumps me.
What all do you copy when you make the one CFG file ?
Thanks eh

I have many CFG files that are copied together into one file. The error
message points more to the name of the target file that it is trying to
create. You probably have an illegal character in-between the "[]" that
can't be used as part of a filename. I didn't like using the IP address as
the target name, I replaced them with the name of the router and something
else that described what I was monitoring (i.e. Target[router1_cpu]: ). Make
sure that the target ("[]") is the same for all entries on the item being
monitored.

Hello:

I would like to try this once again as I did not really get any responses to
my previous email.

First, is anyone able to pull stats from multiple routers (of different IP
addresses) using one CFG file. I have tried this and can not get it to work.
I always get an error.
I have read the DOC, and have attempted to merge the two CFG files that were
created for two routers. Individually both CFG files work fine, however,
when I place them together I get an error:

close: Bad file descriptor
SNMPv1_Session (remote host: "10.1.1.1" [10.1.1.1].161
                  community: "test"
                 request ID: 2068631264
                PDU bufsize: 8000 bytes
                    timeout: 2s
                    retries: 5
                    backoff: 1)

Thanks once again, but I am sure that I must be over looking something very
simple.
Oh yes I am using version 2.8.10 for NT.
