[mrtg] mapping max addresses to switch ports - CISCO CAT 55xx

Using mrtg, I am generating traffic statistics for all ports on 15 catalyst
55xx switches . Also, using snmp, I can also build an index from the port
(3/5, 5/7) to the snmp instance of the port (this gets me to the mrtg
report). I am also pulling the "set port name", which by convention in
my site is the name of the device connected to the port. the result is
that we can search on the web by server name and find the mrtg reports for
the switch port that the server is connected to. kind of cool.

the problem: it is a manual process to enter the server name into the "set
port name" on the switch config. We will try to enforce the standard, but
I know over time the quality of this info may suffer, as servers are moved
from port to port.

I have heard there is a way, using the snmp switch CAM table, to map a port
to a mac address. This would be great! I already know how to turn mac
addresses into ip addresses and names.

Question: does anyone know the snmp journey one must go thru to create a
listing of switch ports - to mac addresses talking on that port?

much thanks for any help or pointers
