Have you looked into the newer ways to specify your targets?  I'm
thinking of interface name, ip address and physical address.

Get the newest MRTG distro and read the doc/config.txt file.  Search
for "Target".

I don't see how to monitor appearing and disappearing sub interfaces
with MRTG.  You can't build a reliable history for them...
