[mrtg] mis-represented data?

when mrtg does its math to calculate the values to graph, does it expect
and assume the value it has recieved is in bytes?  i am feeding mrtg via
an external script in/out values, but the values the unit gives is in
kilobytes.  would this account for screwy graphed values?  if so, should
i convert the number to kilobytes, or use some other option in the
config?
