[mrtg] getting ppp0 stats via serial port on RH Linux?

I want to track the usage of my modem 56K serial connection, this link is 
running on RH Linux 5.2 on ttyS0.

snmp doesn't seem to track this port, and I can't find out where to get 
this info from.

What should I be using to gather the stats?

pppstats, ifconfig ppp0, Something else?

the figures I get from ifconfig and pppstats are different, so I am 
confised as to which would be best (or something else) to extract the data 
for MRTG from.

Any hints, tips or pushes (or examples) will be gratefully appreciated.
