[mrtg] non-updating log?

Hi folks

another one for you.

I recently enabled a standard MRTG traffic graph on an ethernet port. MRTG
is reporting Bitsin :0 and Bitsout :23, as almost constant values. However
when I checked the mib objects ifInOctets and ifOutOctets I computed an
average value of 180-190 bits/s on this port (bits out). I did the
calculation as follows :

(Counter value now) - (Counter value 5 min ago)
---------------------------------------------- * 8 = bits/s value
			300

When I set up a ping trace, the graph sparked into life, and appeared to be
showing correct values. Once the ping was killed, the graph sank back to 0 /
23.

Since I doublechecked on the mibs, I'm not sure why MRTG is under-reporting
the traffic. Any ideas? The relevant config is below.

mrtg 2.8.11.
