Actually, I think an important distinction to make is that SNMP traps do not necessarily need to be enabled.  MRTG does not use traps at all.

It may be the case that some vendors' equipment may need to have traps enabled for SNMP to run, that that is a different case.  I can speak about Cisco routers specifically, and they do not need traps enabled for SNMP to work.

What are you querying?  Cisco? Bay? IBM?  Are they routers, switches, network cards on PCs?  What ever it is needs to have SNMP traps enabled.

I'm running NT 4.0 SP 5, when I run cfgmaker from a command prompt it comes
back with an error that says 

SNMPGET problem for sysDescr sysContact sysName sysLocation ifNumber
sysObjectID on public at xx.xx.xx.xx 
no response received. 

Any ideas?
