I have also found that if you issue the command like this:

    perl .\cfgmaker public at x.x.x.x > file.cfg

usually that works as well.

I didn't really know why until now... :-)

Hi,

other way would be to include the full path:

perl c:\mrtg\run\cfgmaker public at xxxx > file.cfg

To start mrtg you have to include the path:
perl c:\mrtg\run\mrtg c:\mrtg\config\file.cfg

otherwise you'll get:
ERROR: Can't find location of mrtg executable

This is because mrtg calculates the path to rateup
out of the call you used to start mrtg.
If you start without path, it will not be able to find
its binaries (rateup.exe and .pm's).
At least under WinNT ;-)

Where are you running perl cfgmaker from? If the directory where cfgmaker
is located is not in your path, you will need to go there. Typically, when
I run cfgmaker, it's something like this, in the directory where mrtg/run is
located:

perl cfgmaker public at xxx.xxx.xxx.xxx > ../cfgs/interface.cfg

This creates a config file called interface.cfg in a cfgs directory where
all your other cfgs should be. To simplify things, my file names are
actually the alphabetical location for branch connections I am monitoring,
like branch_a.cfg instead of interface.cfg. When I want to add another
router to the existing cfg file, I change the ">" to a ">>".

Good luck! Once you get it working, it is one of the coolest programs out
there!

thank you!!!!
However, I still have a problem. I did download and run the compressed exe
file for ActivePerl 5.6 and it appears to have installed correctly.
But, when I run perl cfgmaker it says: Can't open perl script "cfgmaker": No
such file or directory.
I took all the defaults when I ran Perl. Can you or somebody else help?

I am running Win NT4.0 Service Pack 5. and will be trying to configure
mrtg2.8.12, once I get Perl to work properly.

Hi Felicia,

try ActivePerl from http://www.activestate.com/

It is available via installable compressed exe-file.

to your path (previous post)

Symantec thinks, you should be able to start pcAW
from commandline from every actual workdirectory.
Therefore they add that directory to your path.
Shouldn't be a problem.

Ok, I went to the Perl site and downloaded the Perl 6.0 program and
installed it on my server.
However, the instructions say to get the "Perl Binaries" am I missing
something?

I thought I did install Perl. When I try to run cfgmaker it says it doesn't
exist. So, I went back to the instructions and went to a command prompt and
tried to run
perlw32-install.bat and it says it doesn't exist,

HELP!!!!

Felicia
