If I understand your question, you don't want to graph the 5-minute
average but rather an average that is calculated over a longer period.

This can be done, you could call the mrtg script every 30 minutes or so.
That way, peaks are lesser visible.  Personally I don't think this is
a good thing; if you don't want to know the traffic rate you shouldn't
be using MRTG to graph it ...
