[mrtg] mrtg+routers

hi everyone,
i am a beginer in using mrtg. i have mrtg installed over NT4 and i am 
monitoring a router. the graphs displayed by mrtg is the kilo bytes per 
second incoming and outgoing (daily, weekely,...). But i can't analyse this 
and what's it's utility when problems occurs. in general i want to know the 
benefits of this graphs and i don't know what i can use to monitor for 
example : access servers, firewall, switches,...
sorry for these simple questions but i am newer.
