I don't think that this behaviour was intended. A problem might be that

   kmg[_]:

is handled differently than

   kmg[anything]:

But of course the Real Problem (TM) is that one option controls two
settings: 1. wether units are displayed at all and 2. what units are
used. Maybe an option "option[..]: showunits" should be added.
