[mrtg] Monitoring Server Performance

I am intending to monitor the performance of our servers (CPU, http
hits,etc..) which are all SUN and HP boxes.

I am currently running MRTG on an NT machine and it is fantastically
monitoring the traffic on the routers. However I am little confused when it
comes to monitor servers. I have seen many perl scripts around that does
similar things.

My 2 questions are

1. do I have to run these scripts locally (i.e. on the same machine as the
MRTG) or they have to be on the remote UNIX box.

2. If these are run locally I should be able to use UNIX scripts. ANy
recommendations.

I really appreciate any feedbacks
