[mrtg] Illegal Seek

For some reason my MRTG runs great if I run it manually, but gets the
following error repeatedly when run as a cronjob.. anyone have any ideas?

WARNING: Could not get any data from external command 'pm3lines.pl
public at 4.17.246.197'
Maybe the external command did not even start. (Illegal seek)
