RTFM.  Use

Logdir: /www/mrtg/logs

to specify a different directory for log files.

MRTG now uses .png.   This is for legal reasons.  There is no command to 
make it generate .gif files.  This issues has been discussed at length in 
the forum previously.  If you want the details, do a search on the list 
archive.
