[mrtg] 2.9pre24 with rrdtool/runasdaemon stopped

I fired up MRTG 2.9Pre24 and RRDTool.  It ran for a couple of days, then
mysteriously died.  I can't find anything in the normal places for log files
a grep of /var/log/* showed no messages associated with mrtg - are there any
hidden log files out there that I need to look at to find out why it
stopped?
