[mrtg] rrdtool issues...

I have mrtg 2.9pre27 with rrdtool 1.0.28, and mrtg runs fine alone. but 
after I switch it to use the rrdtool logformat, I get:

netophilia:drk:[10:27pm]:/home/mrtg> /home/mrtg/mrtg /home/mrtg/configs/drk.cfg
ERROR: No <xff> tag found
ERROR: Cannot update /home/httpd/html/MRTG/home/drk/drk.eth0.rrd with 
'969244054:63314835:87018964' rrdopen can't open 
'/home/httpd/html/MRTG/home/drk/drk.eth0.rrd': No such file or directory

any ideas?

I can manually convert the .log files to rrd, and then all runs fine, but 
why would MRTG not be able to convert them automatically?
