[mrtg] Greater granularity in past data

Hi
I'm currently using MRTG 2.9x using rrd with custom scripts to create the
graphs.
This all seems to be working fine.
What I would like is the ability to 'zoom in' on a particular week some time
in the past,
with the same precision no matter how far in the past the week is.
Creating this graph is easy, but the consolidation and subsequent ambiguity
of the data is the problem.
What would be the best way to achieve this ?
Disk space and cpu time is not an issue.
