- First go visit http://faq.mrtg.org/snmp.html
- RTFM.  Do so again and use it while doing the next steps
- When snmp is working, build a config file for MRTG.
  - use cfgmaker to do so
  - use the rest of the faq if/when necessary
- When you have a config file for MRTG, you can try indexmaker
  This is not necessary to view a MRTG page but it can be useful
  if you have more than several pages.

First setup the basics and get some basic knowledge about the
monitoring process.  When this is alright, you will be able to
ask more specific questions.
