Apology accepted. I did go through the manuals a couple of times and the
few questions I had weren't really discussed. I have been using MRTG for 2
days so I am a rookie. It is up and working thanks to some helpful folks on
this list. I appreciate it.

Regards,
Adam

sorry... the RTFM part was in jest to what a lot of other people on this
list do anytime an "easy" question is asked. Im actually trying to poke fun
at the RTFM craze this list has. I didnt mean to come off as having an
attitude, and I apologize. I love answering questions on this list and
helping people out, and I was not trying to "put you down" because of the
question you asked.

Matt

There's no need for the attitude dickhead.

MRTG's job is to grab numbers from sources that you tell it to get them
from. So if the device (OID) you are polling (with SNMP) gives the 5 minute
average, then the spike will be reflected. If, however, the number MRTG
gets is just a snapshot number, then the spike will not be reflected.
One of the biggest mistakes that MRTG newbies make is the assumption that
MRTG is "smart." While it is an awesome tool (especially for how much it
costs :) for graphing the trends and getting baseline numbers, it cannot
tell you more about the device it is monitoring than the device can tell you
about itself.

opps! almost forgot... ahem... RTFM. Thank you.

Ok, fine. In this case, the best place to go RTFM'ing is here:
http://faq.mrtg.org/intro/mrtg2.html
Its pretty well written and kinda gives you the philosophy of MRTG and what
it can and cannot do for you.

Does mrtg, when run every 5 minutes, go out and collect a snapshot of what
is happening at 5 minute intervals and then average it or does it find out
what has been going on for the entire 5 minutes? The reason I ask is that
if something were to spike the bandwidth in between the polling interval,
would that show up on the graphs?
