[mrtg] Graph shows a straight line during lost of network connectivily

I don't understand why mrtg is showing a flat horizontal line in the middle
of the graph instead of dropping to zero during  loss of network
connectivity from the MRTG server to the cisco device being monitored for
several hours.  Can someone help me?
