[mrtg] Unix upgrade from MRTG 2.5.4 to 2.9.17

Hi:

I currently have mrtg 2.5.4 and would like to upgrade to 2.9.17.   I have
downloaded the files for 2.9.17 and am wondering if I need to recompile all
of the files with this version?  or... can I just replace the cfgmaker and
mrtg related files over the existing files. If not, what  files  need to be
recompiled?  I am rather new to the unix world (Solaris) and am not sure of
what the mrtg "dependancies" there may be (i.e. lib files) . Also I am
wondering if this version will still work with the old gd utility that
produces gif graph file formats??? or do I need download the latest version
of gd which only supports the PNG graphic file format.

NOTE: it would be nice if there was a FAQ somewhere on the MRTG site
explaining how to upgrade from previous versions.
