[mrtg] SetEnv problem w/ ext. scripts?

I'm running MRTG 2.9.17, and trying to use the SetEnv feature to pass a
couple of environment variables to an external script target.
The problem is that (if RunAsDaemon:No) the environment variables never
get set before the external script is called.
If using "RunAsDaemon:Yes", the environment variables don't work the
first time the script is called, but they do work for the second and
subsequent script invocations.
Has anyone used the SetEnv feature with any success?
Thanks,
John
