Sorry to follow up to myself, but I wrote:

I based that on the release notes for 2.9.0pre13.  That syntax does not
appear to work in 2.9.7.  I did check 2.9.0pre33 (happen to have it still
running at a client) and found that cfgmaker was able to walk the mib fine,
but generated a config file that would not work.  Once the config file was
modified to use the syntax above it worked fine.

So, something has changed between 2.9.0pre33 and 2.9.7 to cause this to
break.
