[mrtg] need two vars to graph?

hi, i've read in various documentation that mrtg requires
two mib variables to generate its graphs.  i'm trying to
setup mrtg now to monitor hosts and would really like to
graph things against TIME, isn't this possible?  if i 
only specify one mib variable to connect will it graph
against time?
