[mrtg] help on setting 'snmpd.conf' for mrtg

I am trying to install mrtg for the first time. I am using Redhat Linux 6.2 
and I have six interfaces on a private server.  I would like to monitor the 
volume of traffic on each interface.  

My problem is that I am not able to generate the 'mrtg.cfg' file.  Each 
time I try this I get an 'SNMP  Error'. 

May be I need more tips on setting up 'snmpd.conf' and/or 'mrtg.cfg'.  
Could anyone please help? I would like to start with a very basic 
configuration and generate the graphs.
