I am running ucd-snmp on FreeBSD 3.5-Stable and it works quite well. 
I ran a ktrace on it and here is where it looks for the snmpd.conf 
file.

  20326 snmpd    NAMI  "/usr/local/share/snmp/snmpd.conf"
  20326 snmpd    NAMI  "/usr/local/lib/snmp/snmpd.conf"
  20326 snmpd    NAMI  "/root/.snmp/snmpd.conf"
  20326 snmpd    NAMI  "/var/ucd-snmp/snmpd.conf"


There were a number of patches for the version I installed.
