I've actually been looking into using this method of monitoring my servers.
It looks like a much more feasible solution. Especially for multi processor
systems. However I've noticed some short comings of it. I'm wondering if
anyone else uses this method that may be able to shed some light on it.
I noticed you can close perfmon and logging continues. However after a
reboot the log file is created from scratch. I even tried removing the
create new logfile after being closed checkbox. This didn't help either. I
know once mrtg is run on the file it's going to create it's own logs for
historical data for day/month/year. Has anyone ever run across this problem
with say the monitoring system crashing, or being rebooted?

monitoring NT or 2000 can be done from a 2000 box without using SMNP, look

It can certainly monitor NT, W2K I'm not sure about. Take a look at SNMP for
the public community:
