Before doing any MRTG work, I find it's useful to do an snmpwalk against the
device first.
This verifies that:
a) Your community string is properly configured.
b) the name and IP address are correct.
c) the device is reachable.
I'd suggest doing more outside of MRTG to isolate the problem.
