[mrtg] MRTGw/RRDTool: bits or bytes?

I'm running mrtg-2.9.2 with rrdtool-1.0.33. In mrtg I set [options] to 
growright, bits. It appears however, that rrdtool is storing bytes, not 
bits. Do I have to multiply by 8 in rrdtool?
