I've already set the minimum value to 0 in RRDTool, but it doesn't work.
This is because the value stored is not -1 but a very large number (probably
the difference between -1 and the last value divided by the elapsed time). I
could try to set the maximum value instead.

This I don't know. However, if you're using RRDtool just use the
"rrdtool tune" command and set the minimum allowed value to 0.
If a negative number is reported, it will be discarded by RRDtool.
