Sigh... the solution was to change the order of the targets in the
configuration file. Apparently, since this target has a built in latency
of over 4 seconds (vmstat 1 4), the linux cron program was aborting it -
sort of assuming the job was taking too long to run.
By placing it first, the other targets return relatively quickly, so CRON
apparently allows it to stay alive. This is all speculation as the no
error messages are logged anywhere, except for the e-mail message from
CRON.

'/s1/mrtg/tools/dotelnet.sh caddy 1986'
Maybe the external command did not even start. (Illegal seek)
Again, changing the order of targets, such that this one was the first in
the config file, fixed the problem. (This problem existed for multiple
hosts.)
