That's assuming you can't use snmp right?

Subject: [mrtg] ethernet monitor

Hey all,
I'm trying to figure out a way to make mrtg monitor an ethernet card on a
linux server. I believe it will need the data
from the /proc/net/dev file, however I'm having some big problems
generating the data.

For one, I'm not sure what data mrtg needs (for example, does it only need
the raw data (ie, bytes received and bytes
sent?) and nothing else?), or how I would input this data in to mrtg.

Has this been done before? Any suggestions or sample scripts that I can
look at to get me going?

Thanks,
Bill Omer

ps: just as a reference, a /proc/net/dev file looks like this:

[root at www doc]# cat /proc/net/dev
Inter-| Receive | Transmit
