[mrtg] Moving to a new version

I am currently using MRTG 2.8 to monitor a couple hundred interfaces.  My
config is very outdated and I am trying to get it current.  Somewhere I
heard of a tool, maybe RRDTool, that would allow me to create a database of
all of my devices and then just make my changes to the database to keep
things current.  Does this sound at all familiar?

If somebody knows of a tool to do this, could you send me in that direction?
