[mrtg] traffic accounting

hi,

we are trying to summarize our incoming and outgoing traffic.
therefore we use the mrtg log-file.
we found that the counter is counting up to approximately 4 gb then
resetting.
checking the logfiles we found something mysterious.
i show you the log for outgoing traffic.

as you can see the counter is decreasing after reset, instead of increasing.
the increasing is starting one period later.
can anyone explain to me?
i thought the counter is only able to increase?

is there any other way to get our traffic accounting?
