I have no idea what this "message" tells.

First start the regular trouble shooting. Can you reach both machines
from the box where MRTG lives. Can you snmpget the data.

You're querying 4:string at host1, 4:string at host2, 12:string at host1, 12:string at host2
this means you should at least be able to do:

snmpget host1 string .1.3.6.1.2.1.2.2.1.10.4
snmpget host1 string .1.3.6.1.2.1.2.2.1.16.4
snmpget host1 string .1.3.6.1.2.1.2.2.1.10.12
snmpget host1 string .1.3.6.1.2.1.2.2.1.16.12
snmpget host2 string .1.3.6.1.2.1.2.2.1.10.4
snmpget host2 string .1.3.6.1.2.1.2.2.1.16.4
snmpget host2 string .1.3.6.1.2.1.2.2.1.10.12
snmpget host2 string .1.3.6.1.2.1.2.2.1.16.12

If you get valid results for all eight queries, then you can start
thinking about MRTG.
